WHO WE ARE

Solar for a Greene Future was begun in 2023 by Greene County residents to promote the use of solar energy throughout the County.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

We believe that overwhelming scientific evidence points to rapid and significant changes in the Earth's climate, atmosphere, and oceans, primarily driven by the combustion of fossil fuels and other human activities. Addressing the global climate crisis is paramount, but local action is also crucial. Transitioning from coal and natural gas to solar and wind energy is imperative to mitigate rapid global warming. Local governments should facilitate, rather than hinder, landowners in adopting solar energy.

Open letter to Miami Township Zoning Commission

CURRENTLY IN GREENE COUNTY

Greene County citizens have had over $55,000 of their tax dollars spent on attorney fees to oppose a solar project in Miami, Xenia, and Cedarville Townships. Residents of these three townships have funded another $142,000, bringing the total of taxpayer dollars spent to oppose renewable energy sources in Greene County to just under $200,000! At the request of townships, the County Commission has prohibited large solar projects on much of the County’s unincorporated land. County, town, and township land use plans and zoning ordinances are often not solar-friendly. We believe that this resistance to larger-scale solar projects is well-meaning but misinformed.

THE CURRENT FOCUS

Our current focus is promoting enactment of zoning codes that allow for small-scale solar development in harmony with farmland protection and other concerns. We are also interested in promoting the development of utility-scale solar facilities that could reduce our reliance on fossil fuel based electrical power.

Because:

The threat from global climate change is both real and immediate
The transition to renewable sources of energy is a problem of scale
It is important that our children and grandchildren know we did everything in our power to be part of the solution

Our Goals:

Provide a network for county residents who share our concerns.
Educate landowners and government officials by offering high quality information and ideas developed across the United States.
Support landowner rights for farmland owners who want to lease their land for solar electricity generation, including agrivoltaics.
Promote proven policies and best practices for solar use.
Assist landowners and government officials in making informed decisions.
Advocate for zoning ordinances and other local government policies that promote solar use.
Ensure that local and state land use policies regulating the production of renewable energy accurately reflect the sense of the community and benefit the community as a whole.
